Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu co-starred in several films, including the movie Duniya. Produced by Yash Johar’s Dharma Productions, this film featured a cameo appearance by the seasoned actress, who had retired from acting following her marriage to Sahib. Talking about the same, Saira Banu shared an anecdote on social media as Duniya clocked 39 years yesterday.
Saira Banu shares heartfelt memories from Duniya as the film completes 39 years; says, “I have never ever stayed long enough in the theatre to watch any of Sahib’s famous Tragedy King death scenes”
Sharing throwback pictures, Saira Banu captioned, “As I said yesterday, Sahib sprung the surprise of my life, asking me to do a ‘Guest Appearance’ as his wife in “DUNIYA”. You could have knocked me down with a feather when he said this to me. I ventured to tell him that it is years that I haven’t faced the camera and have forgotten about my work, to which in response he laughed and told me a swimmer never forgets to swim when he is once again in the water.”
She further added, “This wonderful opportunity to play Sahib’s wife on ‘CAMERA’ beckoned and attracted me to gradually say “YES” and also in my own way I wanted to thank Yash Joharji and his wonderful down-to-earth wife Hiroo Johar who has always been equally indispensable, warm and friendly in fact a perfect complement of largesse of heart as her Yashji. I have seen @karanjohar growing up as an energetic youngster romping around us, especially at Ootacamund where shooting was on. He is a wonderful helpful youngster for us always.”
“After the initial pangs of being in front of the camera after years together I got into a relaxed groove and thoroughly enjoyed the gamut of the role, and every shooting day became a treat! Then in the script came a death scene where the wife is run over by a truck by the villains. You know, it is well known in my family that though being an actress, I have never ever stayed long enough in the theatre to watch any of Sahib’s famous Tragedy King death scenes, not even in ‘GANGA JAMUNA’. So I turned around to Sahib and Ramesh Talwar, the director with a questioning look and I said to Sahib ‘You have been a Master at this!’ He laughed and joked that he had performed so many of these scenes that he had run out of different ways to perform these death scenes, consequently his personality was being affected and he had turned morose in real life, so his DOCTORS advised him to switch over to Comedy Films and he did “AZAAD”, the first of his series of lighter roles,” said the actress.
“I had been a Glamorous Musical Star and had no idea how to go about this scene, so it was quite a predicament and I of course resorted to taking the able help and tuition from the ‘Master Of Tragedy’ Dilip Sahib. Celebrating #39YearsOfDuniya,” Saira Banu concluded.
For the unversed, Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar tied the knot on October 11, 1966, and the couple were together for over five decades. Dilip Kumar passed away on July 7, 2021 due to old age ailments and prolonged illness.
